Bluebell Railway Wedding in Sussex

Chris & mercy’s summer bluebell railway wedding in sussex
VINTAGE Steam trains & high tea
The Bluebell Railway is a heritage railway line with working steam engines and vintage trains, stations dating back to the 1880’s, and one of Sussex’s top attractions and hidden gems!
Weddings are always special, but some stand out as truly unforgettable. Chris and Mercy’s wedding at the Bluebell Railway in Sussex was one of those days. With steam trains, family, and a love story that spanned continents, their summer celebration was both deeply personal and completely unique.

A Love Story Across the Atlantic
Chris, from the UK, and Mercy, from Florida, first met a few years ago through mutual friends. When Chris was visiting the US and had some sightseeing plans that fell through with a friend that became ill, Mercy stepped in at the last minute to show him around. What began as a lovely day out, soon grew into friendship and, eventually, love.
Choosing the Bluebell Railway
It was no surprise that Chris and Mercy chose the Bluebell Railway for their wedding. Chris, a huge train enthusiast quickly shared his passion with Mercy, and over the years they made many happy memories of their journeys together on the trains. The railway, with its beautifully restored steam trains and vintage stations, became the perfect backdrop for their day.
An Intimate Ceremony in the Waiting Room
The wedding began at Horsted Keynes station, where I met Chris and Mercy for a few photos before their ceremony. In the charming waiting room, they held the first part of their legal ceremony, with just both of their dads as witnesses. Meanwhile, my second photographer, Charlie, was further up the line at Sheffield Park station, capturing their families and friends as they boarded the steam train that would later bring them all together.
Saying “I Do” on a Steam Train
The second part of the ceremony took place on board the train itself, with the registrar conducting the service as the carriages rolled through the Sussex countryside. Just minutes into the journey and the ceremony, the train plunged into darkness as we went through a tunnel – dramatic train-inspired film music filled the carriage—an unforgettable touch that had everyone llaughing.

MY HIGHLIGHTS
Here’s a selection of my favourite images from the story of Chris & Mercy’s wedding at the Bluebell Railway in Sussex
Celebrating on the Move
After their vows, Chris, Mercy and their guests enjoyed champagne & nibbles on the train, with everyone soaking up the nostalgia of the journey. Back again at Sheffield Park station, confetti filled the air as guests lined up on the wide platform, before boarding the next train, the Wealden Rambler for a traditional afternoon high tea. Guests were captivated not just by the romance of the day but also by the incredible restoration of the steam trains themselves – for many, it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to celebrate a wedding in such a unique way.
