This lovely April wedding had me flying back from Spain that morning from another gorgeous spring wedding, to shoot Hyun-Sun & Jon’s wedding in a town I know well!
I’ve known Jo the Groom’s mum for a few years from college and also having done some commercial photography for her, she’d always loved my work. So when her son Jon and his gorgeous Korean girlfriend Hyun Sun decided to get married he agreed he’d quite like a few shots of their wedding day, particularly as Hyun Sun’s family wouldn’t be there, so I got a call! Their wedding just happened to be the day after I was shooting another wedding near Alicante in Spain so after a lot of thorough organisation (and 2-hours sleep before catching the red-eye) I arrived at the Town Hall to cover Hyun Sun & Jon’s weddings celebrations.
The ceremony at Croydon Town Hall
Friends and family started to arrive at the Town Hall before it’s doors were opened on this sunny spring day, just as Hyun Sun & Jon arrived in a black taxi. After a short wait, doors opened, they made their way in together, to see the registrar. Jon who must have been at least a foot taller than Hyun-Sun, towered over his petite bride-to-be who looked so sweet in her 50’s style wedding dress. The ceremony room was soon full with friends and family eagerly awaiting the couple. Hyun Sun & Jon had met at college whilst studying languages and she gave him a very good reason to learn Korean! They really were the sweetest couple. With their simple ceremony underway, vows and rings exchanged it was all legal!
The garden party
After some shots in the town hall and on the steps, the wedding party headed back to Jon’s family home in old Coulsdon to start the celebrations. Jo had made their wedding cake and had also organised a scrummy feast as friends and family mingled and relaxed in the garden, just like they would have done for so many other family celebrations. Cigars and champagne for all! It was clear how well they all knew each other and that this would have been one of many happy day’s they’d all spent together.
What made this pair so great to be around was that they just didn’t stop laughing. They were simply beaming and laughing all day and it was infectious! It was such a relaxed low-key celebration without any sit down formality or much at all in fact. The cake cutting was the most formal this small wedding got followed by a few heartfelt speeches and Dad (and mum) getting teary eyed, with a few messages being read out from absent friends and family including Jon’s brother who was overseas wishing them all the best.
And so I left them to continue their celebrations as I headed home for a rest after my 2000 mile journey that day. A few weeks later, after their images were ready, Hyun Sun and Jon contacted me to say they were so glad that Jo had persuaded them to have some of the day captured after all! Photography is memory making. Thanks for taking a look and get in touch if you’d like informal coverage of your wedding wherever it may be!
