FLISS & MATT’S LAID BACK AUTUMN WEDDING AT GRITTENHAM BARN IN SUSSEX

Grittenham Barn in Petworth is a Grade II listed barn set in a stunning part of the West Sussex countryside. With a lake, orchard, woodlands and wonderful views, it really does have it all.

Fliss and Matt described their wedding as laid back, unpretentious and fun, and just wanted their guests to have a great time – a barn wedding delivers a perfect blend of easy going, relaxed charm on an autumn day.

Relaxed family filled autumn wedding

Autumn weddings always carry a certain magic, and Fliss and Matt’s celebration was no exception. Set at the beautiful Grade II listed Grittenham Barn in Petworth, their day was everything they’d hoped for — laid-back, unpretentious, family-focused and, above all, fun. The morning preparations set the tone perfectly. Both Fliss and Matt chose to get ready in local Airbnb’s surrounded by their families. With little ones playing games and darting in and out of rooms, there was a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere that made the start of the day feel more like a family gathering than a formal occasion. It was easygoing, joyful and full of anticipation.

Sussex Barn Wedding

When everyone arrived at the barn for the ceremony, the warm autumn sunshine made the setting even more special. The registrars led a heartfelt and personal ceremony, and as newlyweds Fliss and Matt were greeted with a joyful confetti shower that filled the air with colour and laughter. Guests then spilled out into the grounds, chatting and catching up while enjoying glasses of fizz and the gorgeous canapés from boutique catering company, Eat the Street. As a Sussex wedding photographer, I’ve photographed quite a lot of barn weddings! Sussex is full of them, and Grittenham Barn is pretty special. The styling throughout the day reflected the couple’s shared love of wine and music. Tables featured favourite albums, the vinyl kind, and a lot of thought put into selecting fantastic wines to complement the celebration. Even the cakes — three of them — felt perfectly in keeping with the relaxed country feel, covered with delicate cottage-garden flowers that looked almost too pretty to cut!

Fizz, family photos and a wander through the idyllic surroundings

During the drinks reception we wandered through the barn’s idyllic surroundings to capture some quiet moments together. The jetty by the lake offered a peaceful backdrop, while the orchard and rustic old barns added texture and charm to their portraits. It was one of those golden afternoons where time seemed to slow down just enough to soak it all in. Dinner followed with laughter-filled speeches — including a joint heartfelt speech from Fliss and Matt, thanking their families and generous friends for years of love and support. As the evening rolled on, cocktail hour brought espresso martinis and a surge of energy to the dance floor. In true family-friendly fashion, the youngest guests took over first, spinning and jumping with infectious enthusiasm before the couple’s first dance got everyone involved.

Final Thoughts

The night ended exactly as it had begun — full of smiles, music and the kind of relaxed, genuine fun that makes a wedding truly memorable. Fliss and Matt created a day that felt completely true to them, and it was a joy to document so many fun and laughter-filled moments.
